زندگی در خیابان سخت بود و بیشتر پسرها روزانه برای به دست اوردن غذا تلاش می کردند. بعضی مواقع بازداشت می شدند، بعضی مواقع کتک می خوردند. وقتی مریض بودند، کسی نبود که به انها کمک کند. ان گروه به پول کمی که از گدایی، و فروش پلاستیک ها و دیگر مواد بازیافتی، به دست می اوردند، وابسته بودند. زندگی حتی سخت تر می شد زمانی که گروه های رقیب برای به دست اوردن کنترل شهر با هم می جنگیدند.

Street life was difficult and most of the boys struggled daily just to get food. Sometimes they were arrested, sometimes they were beaten. When they were sick, there was no one to help. The group depended on the little money they got from begging, and from selling plastics and other recycling. Life was even more difficult because of fights with rival groups who wanted control of parts of the city.

On another day, the children went to the marketplace with Nyar-Kanyada. She had a stall selling vegetables, sugar and soap. Apiyo liked to tell customers the price of items. Odongo would pack the items that customers bought.

زمانی که ادنگو و اپیو به مدرسه برگشتند برای دوستانشان از زندگی در روستا تعریف کردند. بعضی بچه ها احساس می کردند که زندگی در شهر خوب است اما بعضی دیگر فکر می کردند که روستا بهتر است. اما از همه مهم تر، همه موافق بودند که ادنگو و اپیو مادربزرگ خیلی خوبی دارند.

The following day when grandma came to visit my mother, I rushed to her house to check the bananas once more. There was a bunch of very ripe ones. I picked one and hid it in my dress. After covering the basket again, I went behind the house and quickly ate it. It was the sweetest banana I had ever tasted.

بعد از ظهر همان روز مادر و پدر و مادربزرگم مرا صدا زدند. من دلیلش را می دانستم. ان شب وقتی که دراز کشیده بودم که بخوابم، میدانستم که دیگر نمی توانم هیچوقت دوباره، نه از مادربزرگ، نه از پدر و مادرم و نه از هیچکس دیگر دزدی کنم.

Later that evening I was called by my mother and father, and Grandma. I knew why. That night as I lay down to sleep, I knew I could never steal again, not from grandma, not from my parents, and certainly not from anyone else.
